A new exhibition at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, on display until the middle of January next year, is celebrating what can be created when artists and scientists get together.
You’ll see work where artists are taking inspiration from science, where scientists are using art to show their work in a new light and artworks that have been produced from exciting collaborations.
For many people, science is mysterious – accessible only to those with special knowledge and skills. Art, on the other hand, is something that anyone can enjoy and have a confident opinion of.
Broadly speaking, Art is an accepted part of culture and society, but science is not. The British Science Association (BSA) – a charity founded in 1831, has as its vision a world where science is at the heart of society and culture.
This exhibition, organised by the Bristol & Bath branch of the BSA, is part of the BSA’s work in bringing that vision closer to reality.
More and more artists are now using ideas from science to create new artworks, and many scientists are using art to depict and explain the often obscure ideas that they grapple with every day.
Examples from this exhibition include visual interpretations of quantum dynamics, nanotechnology, genetics, the cosmos and the diseases of old age.
Organisers hope that the works will be more than just attractive pieces of art and that people will be able to engage with the science in a new and interesting way.
The BSA’s mission is to support, grow and diversify the community of people interested and involved in science; and to strengthen their influence over science’s direction and place in society.
